Aristolochic acids (AAs) are present in a number of plants, such as aristolochia (birthworts or pipevines) and asarum (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and are used to treat a number of symptoms and diseases, such as arthritis, gout and inflammation. However, owing to potential renal toxicity and carcinogenicity associated with AAs, the use of aristolochic acid-containing Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) has been curtailed by regulatory agencies.
