In uncomplicated pregnancy the maternal serum levels of total and unconjugated estriol increase throughout the pregnancy until term. The maternal serum level of unconjugated estriol is reduced by about one-quarter, on average, in pregnancies affected by Down’s syndrome and can be used in multi-marker second trimester screening programmes. The DELFIA Xpress Unconjugated Estriol (uE3) assay is a solid phase, time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay based on the competition between europium-labeled estriol and sample estriol for a limited number of binding sites on uE3-specific polyclonal antibodies.
